Lanark History Festival 2011

Well what a cracking Saturday I've just had at the Lanark History Festival. There were Romans, Celts, Knights, Halberdiers, Napoleonic Riflemen, WW2 soldiers...absolutely packed with stuff! Added to that I actually got sunburnt, something of a novelty up here ;)

The Roman auxilliary vs Celt combat re-enactment was a classic...
Celts vs Roman auxilliaries

...and as you can see, one rowdy onlooker was dealt with swiftly (I think he asked them if they were vikings or something):
Lost the head!

I had a shot on the archery range with the longbow and got a score of 14. The chap running the range said that was an average score...though he upped this to 'above average' when he saw my obvious dejection :)
One thing is for sure though - I'm getting a longbow for the back garden!

I also met Simon Lister (, author of an arthurian trilogy, while I was there -  a thoroughly lovely chap. His books sound well worth checking out if you like historical fantasy - they are set in a future dark age that sees the return of Arthur to Britannia. I've bought a copy of the first volume and can't wait to get started (though it may take some time to get to as I'm in a phase of reading two pages of anything at bedtime before conking out!)

Anyway, I'd sum this up as an absolute cracker of an event and I'll definitely be going back next year.
